I welcome today’s adoption by the AGRIFISH Council of the Directive amending the EU rules on the taxation of savings income.
This has been a priority of the Greek Presidency, as the amended Directive allows for the extension of the scope to a wider range of savings products and strengthens its effective application, enhancing therefore tax transparency and making a big step forward for the fight against tax fraud and evasion, and, indeed, tax fairness and social justice.
The Coreper I, at a meeting on 19.03.2014, approved a compromise proposal by the Greek Presidency on ''a proposal for a Council Decision on the signing, on behalf of the European Union, of the Treaty of Marrakesh which facilitates access to published works by persons who are blind, visually impaired or otherwise print disabled'' [a proposal submitted by the Commission on 20.12.13, COM (2013 926)].
The Agriculture and Fisheries Council meeting will take place in Brussels, on Monday 24 March 2014, starting at 10:00 (CET). It will address both agricultural and fisheries matters. The Council will be chaired by Greek Minister for Rural Development and Food, Athanasios Tsaftaris.
2,500 children circled the Acropolis raising more than 2000 colourful balloons on the sky and sending the message of peaceful coexistence of all people without racial discrimination.
EU’s social partners joined European Commission President José Manuel Barroso, European Council President Herman Van Rompuy and Greek Prime Minister Antonis Samaras (representing the rotating EU presidency) at The Tripartite Social Summit held today (20.3.2014) ahead of the Spring EU Council.
The Summit focused on the launching of the Strategy “Europe 2020” and agreed on the need for further collective efforts to pursue sustainable economic growth, while ensuring social cohesion and quality employment.
“The Greek Presidency this morning reached a provisional agreement with representatives of the European Parliament on the Single Resolution Mechanism regulation. This was done in conjunction with the valuable input and contributions by the Chair of the IGC at Ministerial level, Jeroen Dijsselbloem on the aspects of the Single Resolution Fund, which was intrinsic in reaching the overall agreement.
The agreed text will now be submitted to the Member States, and I hope that they will be able to support it.
