Greece’s fifth Presidency is bringing Greek art, music, literature, cinema, and gastronomy across the world with events that highlight the country’s distinct cultural identity and its global resonance. Many of these events are already underway in several European cities and will soon wrap up, still others will open in the coming weeks.

In Brussels:
Nautilus, navigating Greece, Bozar Museum, 23 January to 24 April 2014

In Rome:
Classicism and Europe: The European destiny of Greece and Italy, Presidential Quirinale Palace in Rome, 28 March - 1 July 2014
In Tivoli:
Hadrian and Greece, Villa Adriana amid classicism and Hellenism, Villa Adriana, 9 April-2 November, curated by Elena Calandra and Benedetta Adembri. Villa Adriana at Tivoli, near Rome, is a site on the UNESCO world heritage list. On display there will be over 50 masterpieces, many of them exhibited for the first time in Italy, depicting the relationship between Emperor Hadrian and Greece. The event coincides with the semesters of Greece’s and Italy’s European Presidency of the EU, in 2014 and will be hosted in the villa’s Antiquarium del Canopo. The exhibited artefacts come from museums in Athens, Marathon, Piraeus, Corinth and Loukou.
In Lisbon:
Towards the bare essential, Dom Luis I Foundation, 7 March-25 May 2014. The artist Christos Bokoros exhibits his work “The bare essentials”, as well as and some of the most representative of previous works, such as "An ancient way to illuminate black squares", "Candles" and "Signs of Freedom". The exhibition is one of the major cultural events in Portugal, organised in the framework of the Greek Presidency of the Council of the European Union.
In The Hague:
Europe: Our Common Route, Huis Van Europa, 8 April-30 May 2014. The Embassy of Greece and the Stichting Griekse Cultuur Filotechnia present this exhibition of artworks by 22 Greek artists who live and work in the Netherlands.
European Medieval Music: Kosterij Duinzichtkerk Van Hogenhoucklaan, 8 May 2014. The concert is organized by the Greek Embassy in The Hague. This concert of Medieval European music, includes many musical pieces from different European countries, based on research conducted by the head of the musical group and music professor, Alexander Kyrkos.
In Paris:
Europe Day, 9 - 10 May, Paris City Hall forecourt. For the 9th consecutive year, la Mairie de Paris organizes in collaboration with various entities associated with Europe, a celebration of Europe. During the two-day celebration, Greece and Italy, the two countries that hold the rotating presidency of the Council of the EU for 2014, will participate, as guests of honour, with special stands; also a dance group from Thessaloniki will perform traditional Greek dances.
Antigone: 12 June 2014, in UNESCO headquarters. The play will performed in the framework of the Greek Presidency of the Council of the European Union in collaboration with Greece’s ambassador to UNESCO. ‘Antigone’ will be performed in Greek with French surtitles and will conclude the events of the Greek Presidency in Paris.
In London:
Modern Greek Printmaking: 12 Star Gallery, at Europe House (HQ of the European Commission Representation in the British capital), 7-23 May 2014. Marking the Greek Presidency of the EU Council, the Hellenic Foundation for Culture in collaboration with the Greek Embassy in London are organizing a modern art exhibition with works from the Yannis Papakonstantinou Collection, highlighting the richness and diversity of modern Greek art. Yannis Papakonstantinou Collection is considered one of the most important private collections in Greece, with 1,100 works by 250 Greek artists of the 19th and 20th centuries.
