Α Special Event on the EU Strategy for the Adriatic -Ionian Region will be held in Athens on 6-7 February 2014 (draft programme). This meeting, which will bring together various stakeholders (such as professional associations, universities and research institutions, civil society organizations) from 8 participating countries, will mark the conclusion of consultations with stakeholders on the four pillars of the EUSAIR.
The event will present the results of these consultations (which are ongoing), as well as public consultation conducted by the European Commission. Following the Athens event, the Commission will draft a communication on the EU Strategy for the Adriatic and Ionian Seas, as well as an action plan.

The overall objective of macro-regional strategies for the Adriatic and Ionian Seas is the promotion of economic and social prosperity, as well as growth and job creation in the region. It is also expected to contribute to the European integration of the Western Balkan countries.
The strategy focuses on regional issues of common interest and is structured around the following four pillars a) innovative marine and coastal development b ) connectivity c ) preserving, protecting and improving the environment and d ) increase the attractiveness of the region . As horizontal issues dealt a) research and innovation and b ) the creation and development of management / administrative capacity (capacity building).
