Making tobacco products less attractive, especially to young people: Council adopts revised EU tobacco directive

The Council approved yesterday (14.3.2014) a revised EU tobacco directive that it is expected to enter into force in May, 20 days after its publication in the Official Journal of the EU. Member states will then have two years to transpose the directive into their national laws, and will have to apply the new rules from the end of this period.

Council agrees its position on the European Railway Agency

The Council today agreed a general approach regarding a proposal aimed at defining new tasks of the European Railway Agency to reflect its future stronger role in safety certification and vehicle authorisation.

The Greek Minister of Infrastructure, Transport and Networks, Michalis Chrisochoidis, chaired the Council in which Deputy Minister of Infrastructure, Transport and Networks, Michalis Papadopoulos also participated.

Freezing and confiscation of criminal proceeds directive adopted today

The Council adopted today a directive on the freezing and confiscation of proceeds of crime in the EU (PE-COΝS 121/13). The directive aims to make it easier for national authorities to confiscate and recover the profits made by criminals from cross-border and organised crime.

Streamlining judicial cooperation on criminal investigations across the EU

The Council adopted today a directive regarding the European Investigation Order (EIO) in criminal matters (PE-CONS 122/13). The goal of the directive is to allow member states to carry out investigative measures at the request of another member state on the basis of mutual recognition.

Agreement on capital increase of the EIF improves SMEs access to finance

On the basis of a compromise proposal by the Hellenic Presidency, the Permanent Representatives Committee (CΟRΕPΕΡ II) reached an agreement on the Decision of the European Parliament and of the Council on the participation of the European Union in the capital increase of the European Investment Fund (EIF).

Visa waiver for Moldovan citizens with biometric passports

Citizens of the Republic of Moldova, holding biometric passports will be able to travel to and throughout the Schengen area without a visa, as a result of amendments to the regulation No 539/2001 which the Council approved today (14.3.2014). The visa free regime concerns stays of up to 90 days and should enter into force in early May 2014.

Transport issues to be discussed at the Transport, Telecommunications and Energy Council

The meeting, which will be chaired by the Greek Minister of Infrastructure, Transport and Networks Michalis Chrisochoidis , will start at 10.00 CET.
 
First, the Council will be asked to agree on a general approach regarding a proposal intended to define new tasks to be carried out by the European Railway Agency. The draft regulation is part of the fourth railway package.

Collector’s silver euro coin dedicated to the Greek Presidency

Greece’s Finance Ministry is issuing a €10 Collector’s silver coin dedicated to the Greek Presidency of the Council of the European Union 2014. The selling price of the Collector’s coin is € 52.85 (plus V.A.T.) and the maximum mintage 5,000 coins.
