The Prime Minister of Greece, Antonis Samaras, representing the Greek Presidency of the Council of the EU, welcomed the official launch of the High Level Group on Own Resources, which took place today in Strasbourg with European Parliament President Martin Schulz and European Commission President José Manuel Barroso, and warmly congratulated Mario Monti on his appointment as its Chairman.
The setting up of the High Level Group was agreed between the Council and the European Parliament in June 2013 as part of a deal on the EU multiannual financial framework (MFF) for 2014-2020. The task of the Group is to undertake a general review of the EU own resources system, which should be guided by the overarching objectives of simplicity, transparency, equity and accountability. The progress of the Group’s work will be assessed at political level at least once every six months. On the basis of the results of the Group’s work, the European Commission will assess whether new own resources initiatives are appropriate.
