In the framework of the Hellenic Presidency of the Council of the EU, the official meeting of the Heads of S.I.Re.N.E. Bureaus, will take place in Athens.
The S.I.Re.N.E. Bureaus are the responsible national authorities of the Member-States of the Schengen Treaty, which conduct the exchange of supplementary information for registrations of the National Schengen Information System of 2nd generation (S.I.S.II).
Among their tasks is also the coordination of the quality check of the data inserted into Schengen Information System. For the above mentioned reasons, the S.I.Re.N.E. Bureaus have access to the data that are being processed into S.I.S.II. In order, each Member-State to be able to respond to the function demands, that are determined through the Schengen Convention, it shall establish the above mentioned Central Authority (S.I.Re.N.E.), which will work as a single point of contact for the exchange of the supplementary information, related to the S.I.S.II data. This point of contact known as “S.I.Re.N.E.”, must operate on a 24/7 basis.
During the conferences of the Heads of the S.I.Re.N.E. Bureaus, best practices of function are being discussed. Moreover, legal, procedural, and technical issues are being resolved, always under the umbrella of the relative legal framework (Regulation 1987/2006 of the European Council & Decision 2007/533/JHA of the Council). The forthcoming meeting will take place in the premises of Zappeion Megaron in Athens, on 19-20/06/2014. The participants will be the heads of the S.I.Re.N.E. Bureaus of the 28 Member-States of the Schengen Treaty and representatives of the European Commission as well.
The Hellenic S.I.Re.N.E. Bureau is a subordinate department to the International Police Cooperation Division (IPCD) of Security Branch of the Hellenic Police Headquarters.
