EU to secure an easier way home for unlawfully removed national treasures

The permanent representatives of the member states have endorsed today the informal agreement reached on 18 February 2014 between the Council and the European Parliament representatives on the proposal for a directive on the return of cultural objects unlawfully removed from the territory of a member state. This agreement paves the way for the official adoption of the directive by the Council during the Greek Presidency.

Commenting on the agreement, Greek Culture and Sports Minister Panos Panagiotopoulos said: «The fight against illicit trafficking of antiquities constitutes a high priority for our country. I am optimistic about the progress that has been made on European level for the strengthening of the current legislation with a view to protecting, preserving and enhancing the European cultural heritage and identity».
